In some Central Asian regions, one out of every 4 children will die before they reach 5 years of age due largely to water-borne diseases.

JDA has provided access to clean water by drilling and digging water wells and installing hand pumps on more than 600 wells. Where communities do not have access to shallow water, they are learning new appropriate techniques in purifying their water through solar water disinfection. Community health education programs are being conducted covering such topics as hygiene, nutrition, water treatment, first aid, family planning, alcoholism and drug addition.

Infrastructure

Years of civil war, compounded by Taliban rule and the worst drought in memory, have devastated Afghanistan . Virtually all of the country's institutions and much of the its infrastructure were destroyed. In the last few years of Soviet rule the infrastructure was already dilapidated. In the central Asian republics transition has been difficult and little has been done to improve or expand basic infrastructure

JDA is helping rural communities and institutions by constructing and rebuilding critical infrastructure components.
