In some Central Asian regions, one out of every 4 children will die before they reach 5 years of age due largely to water-borne diseases.

JDA has provided access to clean water by drilling and digging water wells and installing hand pumps on more than 600 wells. Where communities do not have access to shallow water, they are learning new appropriate techniques in purifying their water through solar water disinfection. Community health education programs are being conducted covering such topics as hygiene, nutrition, water treatment, first aid, family planning, alcoholism and drug addition.

Agriculture

Agriculture plays an extremely important role in the development of Central Asia and for basic food sources for the rural population. Instability in the region and years of natural drought and man-made water shortages make it very difficult for the people to meet their basic needs. In addition, poppy growing in Afghanistan and the cotton monoculture that exists in Uzbekistan present unique challenges to find ways to introduce new crops.

JDA is working on new farming techniques to bring new high protein multiuse crops to the region. Helping communities become self sufficient in food production is a main goal in development work.

JDA

  • Introduced soy beans as a new cash crop for farmers.
  • Introduced a new poultry program which has given poor families in rural areas a help to economic freedom.
  • Experimenting with new crop production.
  • Providing training seminars with local farmers in new techniques of irrigation and crop .
